Analysis and organization are key traits of any economist. Economist have an eye for detail, a love of numbers and the ability to look at large amounts of data, discern trends and forecast future performance.

Economists deal with statistics. They study how resources such as land, labor, goods and services are distributed and utilized. To understand how these resources are used they collect and analyze data while monitoring economic trends. They deal with the cost of energy, taxes, business cycles, employment issues and interest rates.

Training and Qualifications

Economist must be well-versed in math, statistics, mathematical computer modeling and proper methods for gathering data.

Education

It is common for economists to hold a doctoral degree, especially those that work for large firms as consultants or in the private sector as advisers. If you earn a master's degree, which takes five to six years to complete, you can work for the federal government or in a corporation.
